Calcaneus Fracture – 20F

20 yo female – jumped off a bridge into a river, landing on a rock. Intoxicated.

Not the worst calcaneus fracture we have treated, but given her age and activity levels we wanted to give her a functional subtalar joint.

The video taken of her STJ range of motion was at 8 wks. Being young and healthy makes her lack of edema deceiving. Most of our Calc ORIF’s are much more swollen at this point. She was in a sneaker and PT at 10 wks.

We check vitamin D levels on every single patient that has bone surgery. In the midwest we see values are often under 50.
30 is low normal, but we want 50+ for optimal healing.
